What Are Porcelain Dental Veneers?

Veneers are constructed of thin layers of dental porcelain. They adhere to the tooth’s surface. They also mimic the tooth’s enamel. Dentists recommend placing veneers on teeth that are healthy but in need of minor aesthetic corrections. Issues that are typically corrected with veneers include:

  • Size and shape: Chipping a tooth can cause your smile to look unsightly. This minor issue can be corrected by placing a veneer over the front of the tooth. The veneer will fit snugly and will blend in with your other teeth. Other size and shape issues that can be addressed with veneers include correcting teeth that you believe are too square, too round, too big or too small for your face. If you suffer from bruxism, otherwise known as grinding your teeth, your teeth have probably become worn down. Veneers porcelain can lengthen your teeth.
  • Tooth color: Porcelain teeth veneers can also be utilized to brighten discolored, yellow or dingy teeth. Teeth lose their brightness for a variety of reasons. These reasons include drinking coffee or tea, taking certain medications, using tobacco products and aging. If traditional whitening treatments have failed to restore your smile to its natural brightness, veneers can help. You can even choose what shade of veneer you want, so your smile can be as bright as you’ve always wanted.
  • Alignment and spacing: Minor gaps in the teeth and minor alignment issues are also addressed with veneers. This is a great option if you are self-conscious of your smile but don’t want braces.

Our dentists are always here to answer any questions you have, as well as to advise you on the right course of action for you to take.

Can You Tell Me How Much Porcelain Veneers Cost?

We can provide you with a detailed estimate of how much porcelain veneers cost after one of our dentists has performed an examination on you. The number of teeth you want to put veneers on and the type of veneers that you choose will determine your total cost.

What Is the Procedure for Getting Veneers?

Having any sort of dental procedure done can make anyone feel nervous. The porcelain veneers procedure is a fairly simple and pain-free procedure. Your dentist will make a mold of your tooth or teeth to be sure that your veneer fits the way it is supposed to. A thin (around 1mm) layer of enamel will then be taken off of your tooth. The exact amount will be determined by the brand and type of veneer you are having put on. Once the veneer fully adheres to the tooth, you will not be able to tell any difference between it and the rest of your natural teeth. It will stay fully in place and will not stain.

Are Crowns and Veneers Different from One Another?

Crowns and veneers are both as permanent as fillings are. While they are comprised of the same materials, adhere to the structure of the tooth and address cosmetic concerns, there are some differences between them. For instance, porcelain veneers are applied to the front of the tooth, while porcelain crowns fit over the entire tooth. Crowns are often called “caps” due to the way that they fit over the tooth.

Dental crowns are utilized when the tooth’s structure has become compromised due to age, trauma or decay. This also sometimes happens when a patient has been grinding their teeth. When the crown is placed, the dentist will remove around 2mm of the tooth’s enamel so that the crown can be placed properly. Once the crown is fully in place, it will strengthen the tooth. This makes crowns an excellent choice for patients in need of cosmetic or structural issues in the back teeth.

Will My Porcelain Dental Veneers Last a Long Time?

Barring any accidents involving your teeth, veneers can last for decades. To be sure that your dental veneers last as long as possible, you need to take proper care of them. This includes brushing and flossing them. It also includes refraining from using your mouth to open things like bags and bottles.

How Are Lumineers® Different from Other Veneers?

Lumineers® are ultra-thin veneers that are exceptionally durable. The thin and translucent nature of the veneers makes this brand a popular choice for patients who want discreet veneers that don’t require as much enamel to be removed from the teeth. This brand is so durable that they have been known to last for over 20 years.

Do I Need to Do Anything Special to Take Care of My Veneers?

The most important thing you can do to take care of your porcelain dental veneers is to brush and floss every day. In addition, if you grind your teeth you may want to wear a night guard when you sleep to keep yourself from damaging your veneers.
