Teaching Proper Dental Care – National Children’s Dental Health Month and Give Kids A Smile Events

While many people associate the month of February with hearts, flowers, and candy, family dentistry experts and oral health professionals throughout the U.S. know that for the past 65 years, February has been National Children’s Dental Health Month (NCDHM). A major initiative of the American Dental Association (ADA), the purpose of NCDHM is to foster a greater sense of awareness among children, parents, educators, and other caregivers of the necessity of maintaining sound oral health and dental care practices now and into the future. By facilitating the distribution of informative educational materials and teaching aids, and encouraging widespread participation by its membership, the ADA hopes to spread the word about good oral health to children. This year, increasing numbers of dental professionals also plan to host their own, local Give Kids A Smile program events in which they will volunteer their time to provide dental care and screenings to kids from underserved areas within their communities. During February, dental care professionals all over the U.S. will incorporate the Give Kids A Smile program into their work, further supporting the NCDHM’s goals. The nationwide Give Kids A Smile events give volunteer dentists and their staff members an opportunity to provide screenings and dental care treatment to underserved children in their communities. Nearly 45,000 dental care professionals participate in this initiative each year. The combined efforts of NCDHM and local Give Kids A Smile events are truly remarkable. The American Dental Association offers many educational resources that can be used to teach children proper dental care practices and help them learn positive oral health habits. Dental professionals, parents, teachers, and others can access free online educational guides, lesson planning tips, coloring pages, and activity sheets, which are just a few of the available tools. This year’s materials have been created around the slogan “Join the Super Smile Team,” and will make an impression on children nationwide.
